There are a number of details that need to be addressed between the time you negotiate the dealon your home, and the day you take possession. Planning ahead could help take away some stress and turn your moving day into the rewarding experience it should be. Here are a few things for you to consider before your move: 1. Do a final walk-through. Before closing takes place, take one last look around the home. Check taps and flush toilets to ensure that the plumbing is working correctly. Check electrical systems by testing light switches and outlets. Look for any loose wires or potential hazards. If you find any problems before closing, you may be able to request that they are fixed before the deal is complete. 2. Find the right moving company and book early. When choosing a mover, look for more than just the best price. Some companies will be less than forthcoming with any negative track records. You can check with your local Better Business Bureau to see if any complaints have been filed against the company, or ask family and friends for a recommendation. Once you have decided on a mover, be sure to call and book your moving date early to avoid disappointment. 3. Look into moving insurance. Because accidents happen, a little money spent on insurance can go a long way for added peace of mind. The amount of coverage required will usually be calculated in one of three ways: by weight, by volume or by the estimated value of your belongings. 4. Make sure utilities are working. If the home you are moving into has been vacant for some time, you may want to make sure the utilities are operating on your moving day, such as power, water, phone, etc. 5. Keep in mind additional closing/moving costs. Although closing costs vary from area to area, you can typically expect to pay anywhere from three to six per cent of the purchase price in closing costs. Often a new home will require some new furniture or household products, and these costs can quickly add up. You may want to look into cash-back offers when you are negotiating a mortgage to help with these costs. 6. Remember to change your address. Change your address with Canada Post at least two weeks before your move to avoid the aggravation of lost mail. Make a list of everyone who should be notified of your address change.
